CCL (Cerner Command Language)

CCL A

I am currently seeking a position to utilize my CCL skills and experience.  With over ten years of experience writing Discern scripts, I have written or modified thousands of CCL scripts, across numerous Cerner solutions and custom script requests for dozens of Cerner clients.  I am proficient with coding from back-end environments and with front-end tools including Discern Visual Developer, Layout Builder, and Explorer Menu.  Custom requests I have written include labels, requisitions, consent forms, order sheets and reports.  I have also assisted clients with investigational queries, efficiency analysis and client training.  I will consider full-time, part-time or consulting work, but I would prefer the position allow me to work remotely, as I am unable to relocate at this time.

Computer Task Group (CTG) provides high-value, industry-specific IT solutions and services that help clients achieve competitive advantage. CTG’s clients range from small and mid-sized companies to many of the world’s largest multinational corporations.  CTG serves companies and organizations in several industries and is a leading provider of IT and business consulting solutions to the health care market.  CTG operates in North America and Western Europe.

From Sept 2004 through Feb 2008 I was allowed an opportunity to complete a personal goal and wrote a novel.

Cerner Corporation, Kansas City, Missouri:  June 1995 to September 2004

Cerner is the leading U.S. supplier of healthcare information technology solutions with more than 1,500 clients worldwide.  Cerner systems are designed and developed using a single unified data model that allows each participating department within an integrated healthcare enterprise to access an individual patient’s clinical record at the point of care, organize it for the specific needs of the clinician on a real-time basis, and use the information to make decisions to improve efficiency in providing care and productivity of the entire enterprise.

Duties have included:

  • Jun 95 – Jan 98: Programmer/Analyst for Classic Order Management

Self-trained in COBOL and CCL Discern (Cerner Command Language, an SQL-based language used throughout Cerner).  Responsible for all support of the CPW server, the primary orders server in Classic as well as multiple applications and all CCL work.  Also supervised training of new associates before moving to Millennium.  Was a member of the 1998 Best Organization Award – Client Services.

  • Jan 98 – Jun 01: Sr. Programmer/Analyst for Millennium PowerChart / Order Management / Doc Management

Originally brought on as a CCL Specialist to handle support, design and maintenance of custom discern requests as well as server and application scripts.  Shortly after joining the integrated teams and becoming self-trained in Visual Basic, I also became responsible for the support of the entire set of PowerChart DCP Tools, including taking IAC calls, debugging and creating code corrections for clients.  This application suite encompassed approximately 20 front-end applications and well over 100 supporting CCL scripts for user tools across PowerChart, Order Management as well as Doc Management.  Working closely with all three teams, I was the resource for any discern scripting needed; from investigation and debugging ad hoc, to full report requests.  I was asked repeatedly to hold a CCL training session for clients at our on-campus training facility, and I frequently offered informal CCL training for our team members.  Before leaving, I was offered a Team Lead position over the DCP Tools, but decided to focus on custom CCL work.

  • Jun 01 – Sept 04: Sr. Software Engineer for ATG Custom Discern

The Custom Discern team handled client specific requests across the entire domain of Cerner applications, including corrections or modifications for older programs, to entirely new software needs.  Responsibilities included scoping the work effort needed, reviewing data base schema to evaluate the proper tables and information needed, scheduling and managing the multiple requests, coding and testing the program(s), delivery and final approval from the client.  Requests ranged widely from aiding a client to complete her own program, investigational scripts, custom requisitions, to extremely complex reports.
I was able to help introduce additional standards within the team’s processes, including white and black box testing in conformity with other organizations, technical documents to assist users or later engineers to review the custom code, standards concerning code reviews, as well as the idea of a catalog from which clients could view available code and purchase multiple items.  I was always available, and often brought in as consult on other programmer’s projects.  I was chosen to aid the ProFit team in a three month effort to rewrite their scripts, during which time I offered server suggestions to improve their solution.  When the ATG Discern group re-organized to the CinC model (when clients became grouped geographically), I became manager of the Southeast CinC, with one direct report.  The Southeast CinC included well over a dozen clients, and we worked with both Cerner project teams as well as directly with the clients to meet their needs.  During my time with this team, I was able to maintain several perfect feedback ratings with multiple clients during each quarter.
